While hosting your site on the cloud is a very wise and cost-effective decision, it is equally important for your business to invest on backup services. Every cloud provider takes regular backups and in the event of any calamity, the virtual servers can automatically be recreated and restored with minimal disruption in services.

But this is so far as the virtual machines are concerned. There is every possibility of the files that are stored in the machines getting corrupt and risks of you losing your files and applications are very high. Cloud hosting providers are not responsible for the backup of the data that is stored in the virtual machines. You could restore the entire VM image but this could also wipe out the other data that is stored.

Keeping a backup of the data on your own will enable you to recover the lost data much quicker and in a better way. How you take the backup will depend on the operating system you are using.

Windows servers come with a standard backup tool that should suffice while the Linux users will need to use some software. Either way, it is recommended the backups are done at a remote location away from your business as an alternative recovery source lest the server fails or files get corrupt.

Yes, it is vital for you to keep a cloud backup of all your files for any type of risks including some natural disasters like fire, floods, hurricanes etc or accidental deletions. There are possibilities of security lapses too and you could be a victim of the acts of cybercriminals. Investing a little on data backup will be beneficial in the long run. You could keep your cloud provider backup measures as a secondary precaution using your own backup as a primary liner of protection.
