Server virtualization is a process where a powerful physical server is partitioned and several smaller machines are created to get you the maximum server resources. Each of the virtual servers are enabled to run multiple operating systems. Resources like physical servers, processors, operating systems are all masked and kept isolated from the server users. The actual machine where the virtualization takes place is called the Host Machine and the smaller machines with the guest operating systems are called virtual or private machines.

Server virtualization has many benefits:

• It allows each virtual server to run independently on its own operating system.
• Server virtualization leads to reduction of carbon footprint. It reduces power consumption, generates lesser heat and optimizes hardware utilization.
• It saves space as several machines are consolidated on to one single physical server and saves a lot of costs in the process by utilizing the resources to its full capacity.

Server virtualization is created in three ways of

1. Full virtualization: Each guest runs on a virtual imitation of the hardware layer and the guest operating system runs without any modifications.
2. Paravirtual machine: The guest machines are modified to enable them to run in the virtual environment through porting.
3. Operating system virtualization: Each guest is isolated from the other guests and are not affected by one another’s activities. Other guests are not affected if one of them has any issues.

Server virtualization is a technology for partitioning one physical server into multiple virtual servers. Each of these virtual servers can run its own operating system and applications, and perform as if it is an individual server.
