Managing a VPS is not difficult but it does require some knowledge. The web hosts provide easy to manage control panels generally cPanel for Linux and Plesk for Windows. All VPS provider do the managing and maintaining of servers themselves. They have their technical team to monitor the server performance. However, VPS gives the users root access to their space and they are allowed to customize their server. This gives the customers the liberty to install the software of their choice for which the host is not responsible. The host allows them to install the software as long as it does not infringe any of the clauses they put up in their terms of service. The clients are expected to install, manage and maintain the software with regular updates. For this they are needed to have some technical skills. In case the client is not technically competent they can request the host to provide this service as an add-on for which they are required to pay more. The clients can opt for the fully managed VPS hosting where the host provides all the services this gives the client more time and resources to focus on core business.

VPS hosting gives its customers root access and liberty to install the software of their choice for better business performance. The host from their side performs all the maintenance and management of the server including security patches, updates and upgrades as per the SLAs.

But the host is not bound to provide maintenance to the software installed by the client. The clients need to have technical knowledge to maintain the applications they install or can request the host to provide same for which they need to pay extra. In case you are not technically competent you could opt for the managed server.

If you own an unmanaged VPS server, then it needs some technical knowledge to run your VPS server. But if you own a managed VPS server then basic knowledge is enough to run the server. To run an unmanaged VPS server one needs to have a specific and in some cases an extensive set of skills. To start with, try to learn how to deal with minor issues of a Linux VPS. The process of learning will become easier by creating a virtual machine. The virtual machine will provide you a platform on which you can work freely. Through this, your main operations will run undisturbed while you can run multiple command lines. As Linux is an open-source platform, it lets you clarify your doubts with the help of support communities. You need not have many core inner workings but a good hands-on SSH terminal and dealing with the control panel. All of this will take some time but is an inexpensive way to learn server management.
