What are the pros and cons of PaaS?

PaaS (platform as a service) is a cloud computing model wherein you can not only rent the server storage space but also all other developmental tools (for example operating systems, software) over the web. Some of the advantages of PaaS include- it allows automated updates. Consumers need not keep their systems running till the updates are performed.

PaaS decreases overall costs. Consumers need not invest on purchase of physical hardware and its maintenance. They have more control over the tools as they are installed within their platforms and it is customizable too. Features can be changed if business demands. The consumers can pick and choose the services they feel are necessary. PaaS users just need internet connection and this makes it possible for different members of a team to work together on a common application irrespective of their location.

The main disadvantages of PaaS as with other cloud computing services is the data security aspect. Many businesses are still apprehensive of data security. PaaS offers limited scalability unlike IaaS. Consumers cannot create or discard multiple virtual servers. It is not as complete as SaaS since PaaS still require its users to design, create and test application programs before they are offered to the end-users.
