RightScale has been conducting surveys on the trends of cloud computing and how the businesses both established and small startups are contemplating moving to the cloud. RightScale’s input is an important indicator of how organizations are adopting to the cloud services and its security concerns. In its fifth annual survey conducted in January 2016 it laid emphasis on Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS).

This year’s survey is the largest that has been conducted so far on the cloud infrastructure and the respondents were mainly buyers and users of the cloud technology and not the vendors or cloud service providers. About 1060 IT professionals were interviewed on their usage cloud infrastructure. 42 percent of the interviewed professionals represented enterprises that had more than one thousand employees. Rate of error could be about 3.07%.

The survey was mainly conducted to find out

• Scope of SMBs and enterprises adopting the cloud technology
• Their changing views on the cloud security
• Which of the DevOps tools are the most widely used?

The results are interesting and there has been a vast upsurge in the businesses moving to the cloud.

Enterprises are adopting the private cloud and it has significantly increased from 63 percent to 77 percent when calculated year over year. Similarly, businesses are preferring the hybrid cloud strategy and its usage has increased from 58 percent to 71 percent.

On an average users are running their applications on 6 clouds with 1.5 running on public and 1.7 running on private clouds. Users are experimenting with another 1.5 public clouds and 1.3 private clouds.

There is a growth in the percentage of enterprises using more than 1000 virtual machines in the public cloud from 13 percent in 2015 to 17 percent in 2016. The shift was more in the private cloud with an increase from 22 percent in 2015 to 31 percent in 2016 of enterprises using more than 1000 VMs.

Security which has always been a major concern for every organization is not the primary concern this year. The main issue now is on getting proper talent and technical experts say 32 percent of the interviewed respondents. Security comes a little behind with 29 percent. The costs are also a hindrance and it has rose significantly from 18 percent in 2015 to 26 percent this year. There are plenty of opportunities to offset the expenses by shutting down unused workloads, moving the infrastructure to low cost locations. The measures have to be adopted properly. There is also a remarkable increase in the use of DevOps tools with a growth from 66 percent to 74 percent over the year and enterprises taking a larger share of it at 81 percent.

Public cloud users continue to rely on the AWS with use by enterprises increasing from 530 percent to 56 percent. Microsoft Azure has gained in popularity in PaaS increasing from 9% to 13% and IaaS usage increasing from 12 percent to 17 percent.

In conclusion it can be said hybrid cloud adoption is rising with an improved increase seen in private cloud too. Security challenges have taken a second place with concerns shifting to lack of technical manpower.
