Application Program Interface(API) is a medium through which a consumer connects to the services and local applications offered by a cloud provider. Some cloud providers have trademarked APIs which makes it difficult for the consumers to shift to another cloud provider. The cloud providers now offer cross-platform APIs which enables the users to get access to resources and workloads from multiple sources. This saves both time and developmental efforts. The cloud hosting provider APIs support HTTP and HTTPS which enable their users to access to greater cloud flexibility

Cloud APIs functions differently on different services. A Platform as a Service(PaaS) API allows distribution of services such as computing, databases, storage accessories, messaging systems etc. Software as a Service(SaaS) APIs allows connecting the application layer with the cloud such as CRM and ERP applications. Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS) APIs are constructed to give access to specific cloud resources like deploying and diminishing of cloud resources.
