The risk to data and security are two things that weigh heavily in the minds of decision- makers of using the cloud services. However, there is growing belief that the cloud can be a safer bet than the internal security system of an organization.

The cloud hosting providers focus more on security and make sure they keep up with the newest security technologies. They invest up to 40% of their revenue to monitor the clouds for any suspicious activities. This sometimes may not be possible with every business as they may get preoccupied with core business operations.

The infrastructure at an on-premise data center is a mix of new and old systems which can make it vulnerable to cybercrimes. The cloud environment is built with the latest technologies that are designed to fight the cybercriminal activities.

Large organizations spend a huge amount to secure their IT environments. However, they tend not to give the same importance and attention to their secondary IT arrangements which makes it vulnerable to security breaches. Hackers are always looking for loopholes and do not give you a chance.

DR (disaster recovery) initially was to help a business recover any lost information and ensure continuity in case they faced some natural outages. Nevertheless, the focus now is more on security issues. It too is being considered as a disaster and organizations are addressing the issues of loss of reputation and revenue.

You are safe in the cloud if you have a robust security strategy in line with what your cloud provider offers. Encryption, password-protection, access control should be implemented strictly.

Whether cloud or internal, the fact is the system is only as protected as the effort that is put on securing it. Cloud providers have an edge here as they are equipped with more developed technologies. Your IT must take advantage of the security that cloud offers rather than ignore or try to compete with it.
