If the latest research is to be believed, any business that wants to adopt pubic cloud should have a private cloud infrastructure in place to be successful. According to opinion leaders in the domain of cloud computing, a software defined infrastructure consisting of private as well as public cloud are bound to be enjoy prominence among all latest technologies followed by virtual desktop infrastructure and converged infrastructure.
Private and Public Cloud- An Overview
It is quite common for business owners to face a dilemma about choice of public or private cloud while migrating to cloud. It should be understood that public as well as private clouds have their own sets of merits and demerits. It calls for an in-depth study of capabilities of both clouds to decide which workloads are to be migrated to which category of cloud hosting.
Public cloud is offered by cloud providers over internet as a hosted service. These types of clouds are ideally suitable for workloads that are not influenced by security concerns and are not related to sensitive information. You can avail public cloud services in the form of web hosting, web based email, file transfers, online office applications, or data storage just to name a few.
These are offered as multi tenant solutions that involve resource sharing by several users and can be ideally used by startups, small enterprises or large enterprises for handling workloads that do not require compliance with security regulations.
In contrast, private clouds are preferred by enterprises that need to deal with data privacy, security, and compliance. These are also called as enterprise clouds and are strictly implemented within firewalls. Private clouds can be deployed on premises or can be procured from cloud service providers. These are commonly encountered in BFSI organizations, enforcement departments or healthcare industry.
Technology Adoption - Present Scenario
In spite of large number of software professionals engaged in investigating and effectively implementing the latest cloud hosting technologies, barely 24 percent are confident that their departments are in a position to face challenges of modern businesses. This certainly puts a question mark regarding ability of such technologies to address needs of today’s as well as tomorrow’s enterprises and their overall effect on the industry.
The most focused technologies of the modern IT industry are cloud, server virtualization, Hadoop, big data, software defined networking, containers, converged infrastructure, and mobile or tablet computing, to name a few. These are not only deployed, considered, or piloted extensively by organizations but are also being developed or heavily researched by more than half of software professionals.
In spite of widespread industry concerns, leading experts project a handsome demand for private as well as public cloud. This is also confirmed by state of a cloud survey that reports 77 percent growth in private cloud adoption as compared to 63 percent in a year before. This has also resulted in development of hybrid cloud on account of strong association of private cloud. We can also relate the growth of hybrid cloud to growing number of public cloud users.
It is also reported that a whopping 95 percent respondents have adopted cloud in some pr other way and out of these cloud users a bog majority of 71 percent users have embraced hybrid cloud.
Dealing with Challenges in Cloud Adoption
There are multiple issues being faced by organizations that are adopting cloud including management of costs, which has always been a burning issue. The issue has assumed larger proportion with percentage of respondents that are expressing it to be a significant impediment, mounting from 18 to 26 percent. However, major dearth of expertise or resources deserves to be the most dominating problem in cloud adoption in present scenario.
Practically organizations are adopting a hybrid structure of three public plus three private clouds and the portion reserved for applications being 1.5 private and 1.5 public with an additional portion of 1.5 in public cloud.
There is also a formula of 1.7 private cloud for applications and 1.3 public cloud for testing and experimenting activities. It is observed that this particular combination of private and public cloud proves to offer better cost effectiveness that individual adoption of private or public cloud.
The survey also seconds the fact that more workloads are being shifted to public as well as private clouds. This is a good sign and both iterations are growing in this regard. The major contribution to the growth comes from organizations that are operating more than one thousand Virtual Machines.
It is observed that private cloud adoption has surpassed public cloud by almost five percent. There is possibility that the growth in cloud adoption might be possible due to enhancement of long awaited virtualization environments and subsequent branding of these as ‘private cloud’.
Robust growth of private cloud adoption is witnessed in the last two years leads us to believe that private cloud technologies have started bearing fruits. There is an upbeat mood in terms of adoption growth in case of all categories with individual growth being registered between 2 and 10 percent.
Conclusion
Majority of discussions that focus on digital transformation and use of hybrid clouds continue to be part of today’s technology forums. Many tech experts underline significance of leveraging private cloud networks to boost public cloud adoption.
