Kernel-based virtual machine abbreviated as KVM is essentially a virtualization set-up that was designed for Linux kernel. It had been merged with Linux kernel mainline in the kernel version 2.6.20 released in February, 2007. The KVM needs processors having hardware virtualization extension. The KVM was built mainly for Linux operating system and meant to run on the x-86 processors. There are spate instructions for extensions for the AMD and Intel processors. Kernel-based virtual machine is basically a hypervisor which can emulate and allow for creation of virtual servers on operating systems. These machines are based upon the Linux kernel and uses OS like Linux, Fedora an Ubuntu. This KVM supports many different guest OS images such as the Windows, Linux Kernel, Solaris and BSD. It also separate computing resources for all virtual machines like the memory, processor, storage space etc.
