File server is a network connected computer that manages and stores all data files allowing other users on the network to access the files. The users can share information over the network without using any external storage devices. It does not perform any computing tasks nor does it execute programs for its users. It functions as a remote hard disk drive and stores data and files like documents, images and other documents and is easily retrievable by anybody on the network. The internet file server is accessible via the File Transfer Protocol(FTP) or Hypertext Transfer Protocol(HTTP). The other type is the LAN file servers that are accessed via the SMB (Server Message Block) /CIFS (common internet file system) protocol supported by UNIX and Windows and the NFS (network file system) protocol mainly for UNIX. With the rapid changes brought about by technological development the functions of file servers too are changing with the need for storage, high speed and security being the main concern.
