HP-UX is an acronym for "Hewlett Packard Unix". It is UNIX operating system. It is based on UNIX System V which was initially System III and was first released way back in 1984. The recent versions support the HP 9000 series of systems that are based on PA-RISC architecture and HP Integrity systems that are based on Intel Itanium processor architecture.
Earlier versions supported HP Integral PC, HP 9000 Series 200, 400 and 300 of computer systems that were based on Motorola 68000 series. It also supports HP 9000 Series 500 systems based on HP\'s proprietary architecture.
HP-UX was remarkable as it was the first UNIX that offered access control list for accessing the file information. This served as an alternative to standard UNIX permissions. It was also amongst the first UNIX that included a built in volume manager. HP has a partnership with VERITAS Software, and uses the primary file system.
