Network socket is an end point in an inter process communication flow between two programs running over a network. Sockets are designed and used with a set of programming requests sometimes, called as function calls or socket application programming interface (API).
A socket API is usually provided by the operating system that allows application programs to control and use the network sockets. A socket address is the combination of an IP address and a port number.
It is Characterized by a Set of the Following Instances:
- Local socket address: Local IP address and a port number.
- Protocol: A transport protocol including TCP/ IP, UDP and others
A socket that has been connected to another socket while establishing a TCP connection acts as a remote socket address. The most popular socket API is a Berkley UNIX C interface that can also be used for the communication between processes within the same system. Sockets can also be used for connection-oriented transactions.
