An IP address or Internet Protocol address refers to the numerical label which has been assigned to a device such as a computer or printer which is part of a computer network that is using an IP for communication purposes. The IP address therefore performs two key functions namely location addressing and network interface identification. This IP address basically has a name which shows what we are looking for; the address indicates where this is located and the route indicates how we can get there.
The Internet Protocol hierarchy has many classes of IP addresses which can be used for different situations according to the host’s requirements. Generally speaking, the IPv4 Addressing system has 5 classes of IP addresses and all of these are basically identified by their first octet. The biggest benefit of such class based routing is that it makes it convenient to subnet. The most important bits which are situated to the left of the IP address will show the class. The subnet sizes remain fixed and unchangeable. So, the class A addresses typically begin with 0 and these addresses range from 0.0.0.0 to 127.255.255.255.
Although there are 5 classes of IP addresses the most commonly used ones are classes A, B and C. The first bit of the octet in class A IP address is always set to zero. Therefore, the octet ranges between 1 and 127. The default subnet mask is 255.0.0.0; this shows that this class may have 126 networks. The Class A IP addresses are typically designed for larger corporations such as Google. They can support 16 million hosts in every network of its total 127 networks.
