Open Cloud Computing Interface (OCCI)

The open cloud computing interface or OCCI is a complete set of specifications that us delivered by means of an Open Grid Forum for service providers dealing in cloud computing services. Primarily, OCCI is based on a set of implementations which work as proofs for concepts. It works by building upon the fundamentals of the World Wide Web by utilizing REST or the Representational State Transfer for service interactions.

The primary aim of OCCI is to develop API and open specifications for offerings of the cloud. The focus rested on offerings based on IaaS or “infrastructure as a Service”. However the interface is extendible for supporting offerings based on Platform and Software as a Service.

Some of the key goals of an open cloud computing interface (OCCI) include interoperability allowing various cloud hosting providers to work together without translation of data formats, API proxying and depending on several APIS. It also aims towards portability where no technical vendor lock-in would be required and services can be moved between providers allowing clients to switch between providers on the basis of business objectives. This model would also involve minimal costs, fostering and enabling competition.

The other goals include integration and extensibility.
