A virtual storage portal (VSP) is a web application with a web browser interface that allows an end user to see how much storage space is being used, how much is available and tries to predict the future keeping the recent trend in mind. It also allows access to storage administrators so that they find themselves in a better position to view the storage performance and manage the rented space with more efficiency. In other words it is a software application that enables end users to view, manage and edit the storage rented from a cloud storage provider. End users are also provided the facility to inspect and forecast their future storage resources requirements keeping in mind the available infrastructure storage.
An organization that carries out data processing on a large scale and as such requires large volume of storage space, but lack the expertise in buying and managing storage usually opt for a virtual storage provider. The service provider apart from managing and forecasting rented storage resources also provides the facility to access the storage infrastructure. Although the provisioned storage may be from a public, private, community or hybrid cloud storage provider, the primary function of VSP remains the same.
