A proxy server is a server is placed between a web browser and server. Its role is to intercept and check requests to the real server and determine if the request can be satisfied at the proxy server level itself. The request is forwarded to the real server only if it is unable to fulfill the request.
Proxy servers are performance boosters as they save the results of all requests for a specific time period. As the proxy server is placed on same network as the user most of the time, the operation is done much faster operation. It can support hundreds of user requests at the same time.
