Public Cloud Storage

Public cloud storage is most commonly used for backing up important data, which is a part of a DRP or a Disaster Recovery Plan. It is also used for archiving emails as well as non-core static application data. Usually, the usage is charged on per month-per consumption unit basis although some service providers may wish to levy extra charges for access and data transfers, especially for large enterprises on their customer list.

The key advantage of a public cloud storage platform is that the provider stands responsible for building as well as maintaining the complete storage infrastructure. The associated costs including that of server maintenance, cooling and power consumption is also borne by the service provider in question. The customer who pays for the consumed resources can easily scale up the requirement for storage space and even scale it down. In most cases this can be done with a simple click of a button.

Simply put, a public cloud hosting is a solution based on standard cloud computing model in which service providers make resources such as storage and application, made available to the general public, on the net. They can either be a free or paid model.
