Secure Hyper Text Transfer Protocol can be abbreviated as S-HTTP (Secure HTTP or HTTPS),which is an extension to Hypertext Transfer Protocol that allows secure exchange of data over the internet. It is an enhanced version of HTTP that employs secure socket layer (SSL) technology to transmit secure encrypted form of text embedded in the normal text of an electronic document. For a given document or file, it is an alternative to renowned security layer(SSL). The major difference between the two security algorithms is that S-HTTP allows the client to send a certificate to authenticate the user, while in SSL only the server can be authenticated.
The popular application of S-HTTP is in banking and investment websites, e-commerce websites, and most websites that require users to log in. HTTPS does not implement on the basis of single encryption system, but it is equipped with Rivest-Shamir-Adleman public key infrastructure encryption system. HTTPS works at higher level of the HTTP application and can be used by a browser user.
