Abbreviated as SNI, Server Name Indication is an advancement of the TLS protocol that denotes which host name a user is trying to reach. This enables a server to integrate several SSL Certificates into a sole IP address and gate.
How Server Name Indication Works
If you run a website, you can be rest assured of experiencing the influx of web traffic. When someone visits your website, he/she establishes a link with the web server in order for sending the name and domain name of the webpage he/she is trying to visit. This protocol becomes vague after establishing SSL/TLS-connection. The browser will require a digital certificate from the server even prior to tracing the page the browser aspires to access. Subsequently, the Server Name Indication will compare the name on the certificate from the server with the name of the page the browser is attempting to reach. If the names match, the connection will be restored.
