Consistency becomes an inevitable aspect when we think of handling data backups. If all aspects involved in data backups not handled consistently, backups become harder to deal with. Further they may appear as a big issue when data backups were to perform.
Consolidated backups are in trend, however, there are several backups system that are frequently used to manage in many enterprises. It is not evitable that everyone requires a method to set backup policies. If backing up all the servers to a single backup device, for instance - a tape library- is the requirement, a formal method to perform backup policies may over kill. But if you want to perform backup to multiple systems, using different h/w or s/w, a formal method may be a good idea.
While performing backups on multiple systems, just taking backups of policies is not enough, but you need a widely accepted method for setting those policies.
